The United States House of Representatives established a bipartisan committee to investigate the attack on the US Capital during a Joint Session of Congress. These violent extremists tried to forcibly stop the final counting of Electoral College Votes, that elected Joe Biden our 46th President.
Pennsylvania's top law enforcement official, Attorney General Josh Shapiro signed on with other Attorney Generals from all 50 states rebuking the January 6th attacks, "We all just witnessed a very dark day in America. The events of January 6 represent a direct, physical challenge to the rule of law and our democratic republic itself....As Americans, and those charged with enforcing the law, we must come together to condemn lawless violence, making clear that such actions will not be allowed to go unchecked." https://www.attorneygeneral.gov/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/2021-01-13-Capitol-Violence-NAAG.pdf.
In a separate Impeachment Trial Memorandum addressed to the United States Senate dated February 10, 2021, Shapiro dismantles all of Presidents Trumps lies (to that point) about our State's 2020 election: PRESIDENT TRUMP’S ATTACKS ON PENNSYLVANIA’S FREE AND FAIR ELECTION AND THE EVENTS OF JANUARY 6
In a joint statement on November 12, 2020 from the National Association of State Election Directors said, "The November 3rd election was the most secure in American history. Right now, across the country, election officials are reviewing and double checking the entire election process prior to finalizing the result....There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised." By February 2021, Trump and his allies filed more than 40 lawsuits challenging the 2020 election results. All of them failed. By November it was reported, Trump's election fight includes over 50 lawsuits. It's not going well.
Desperate to maintain power, the Republican Party in seven states, including Pennsylvania, created false documents claiming Trump won. "Electors in seven battleground states signed certificates falsely stating that Trump, not Democrat Joe Biden, had won their states." EXPLAINER: How fake electors tried to throw result to Trump.
After drumming up ideas to stop the legal counting of votes, that included a "...Dec. 18 memo, which circulated among Trump’s allies, laid out a plan for Trump to appoint a three-man team to carry out the scheme to use NSA data to overturn the election results....The team was to seize and analyze “NSA unprocessed raw signals data,” and to do so “confidentially” and over the course of “several days,” according to the memo." Trump Allies Schemed to Use NSA Data to Try to Prove Foreign Election Meddling: Memo
After more than a year of silence, on February 4th 2022 former Vice President Mike Pence said, "President Trump is wrong: I had no right to overturn the election. The presidency belongs to the American people and the American people alone. And frankly, there is no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person could choose the American president." Pence says Trump is wrong to insist VP could have overturned election results
0n 2-22-2022 - After a year - Donald Trump has finally, officially lost his endless fight to HIDE all his White House records concerning January 6, 2021:
"The 2020 election in Pennsylvania was free, fair, and conducted in accordance with the Commonwealth’s laws." Josh Shapiro, Pennsylvania State Attorney General
In spite of the irrefutable facts that lead to only one conclusion, many Pennsylvania State Republican Representatives continue to want to dispute it, even though a number of them won their seats in the same election they are opposing. As in many other states, Republicans in our State's legislature have been actively trying to change voting laws to restrict voting in our state. During a pandemic, mail-in voting is a life-line for many of us. "The state law that legalized no-excuse mail-in voting was passed before COVID-19 as a compromise between Democrats and Republicans in Harrisburg. Then the world changed." See: Trump politicized mail-in voting in 2020, but it came to PA with strong Republican support. The sad truth of it all is that we all suffer as a state when our political energies are directed to needless causes like this - supporting a past President who lost his election and will not concede - instead of solving our mutual problems.
